Support Spreads Out For Google’s WebM Video Format

Directly on the heels of the announcement by Google of its new royalty-free video format, WebM , adjunct announcements are pouring in showing far-reachng support for the new format. With Google open sourcing the underlying VP8 codec technology that it acquired from On2 in February, the combination of openness and third-party support could make WebM a healthy competitor for formats such as H.264.

NorthScale, Focused on Memcached, Gets $10 Million In Funding

As GigaOM reports today , NorthScale Inc., which offers data management technology surrounding the open source memcached caching project , has raised $10 million in Series B funding from Mayfield Fund, and previous investors Accel Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners. The company’s total funding is now at $15 million. Memcached is used by many web sites, including Wikipedia, Twitter and Flickr.

Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales On Being Open

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, says that a large part of the success of Wikipedia is due to taking an open approach to content, as GigaOM reports . The widely used “open-source encyclopedia” has grown to the point where it now includes 3.2 million articles.

More Bad English, Please

I’d like to see more bad English on mailing lists, and fewer apologies from non-native speakers about their poor English skills. There’s nothing to be ashamed of in trying to communicate in a second, third, or fourth language and not being an expert. And it’d be a shame if non-native speakers let fear or embarrassment hold them back from making a vital contribution or asking a question that could help them succeed in contributing or using FLOSS tools
