Setting up File Sharing Between Windows, Linux, and Macs with Samba!

This tutorial will show you how to use Samba to share a directory on your Linux machine across your network, accessible by Windows, Linux, and Mac machines. The process takes less than five minutes, and by the end you should immediately see the file server through browsing your Windows network. (This and more at www.linuxhaxor.net) This is not the most secure way to share files via Linux (but you can configure Samba for greater security), and is suitable for a home network without unwanted guests. @MrGizmo757 As for the Win 7 problem (This is common), the easiest solution I have found is to create a FAT32 partition specifically for the Win 7 file sharing. Yes, this is a pain in the ass, yes this is an ugly solution, and yes, this is all thanks to Microsoft and their “new and improved security measures”. If you do go this route, just be aware of the limitations of FAT32(4gb file size max, access rights, etc) and you should be fine.

@MrGizmo757 As far as Mac goes (Assuming OSX), I have had absolutely no luck using Samba to network between a Linux ext3 or ext4 and Macs HFS+. However, SSH was the most logical solution at that point, for my situation at least. You may want to look into an NFS solution on Linux coupled with a free program called NFS Manager for Mac if you’re looking for an easier and more user friendly approach if you have no prior SSH experience.

    2.6.31-20-generic
I need to use winbind to “see” my winblows pc’s. winbind slows down ‘net browsing a lot. if i remove winbind browsing is fine but samba doesn’t work! Any idea’s? BTW I’ve got some hacking vid’s up here on youtube 1 i demonstrate an arp poison mitm attack, 2 i do a DoS against a certain site that has port 21 (FTP) open and filezilla is outdated. let me know that you interested and if you have any workarounds!

I have shared files on my Windows 7 desktop, and I want to share to my Ubuntu laptop. Would I have to run Samba? Or can I just access the files by entering my Desktop network name?

Wow this tutorial is really usefull. I plan to create a dedicated file server in the very near future using Kbunto and samba and various other software within the os. I’m dreading using commands as this is going to be my first real experience with the operating system. I script php so i’m familar with writing lines of code and had some experience in dos and command prompt within windows. Is linux always command based or is there GUI options aswell?
